November 12, 2024Housed in the former church of St Marks in Silvertown, Brick Lane Music Hall are proud custodians of not only the magnificent church building itself, but also the memorial to both world wars located in its grounds.
Having been allowed to fall into disrepair when the church was deconsecrated, as part of Brick Lane Music Hall’s overall restoration project in 2003, the memorial was restored to life. Alongside the the former church’s Grade II* status, it was subsequently awarded its very own Grade II status by English Heritage.
Now a landmark in its own right, the memorial continues to be cherished. Work took place over several months last year to restore the thousands of names carved into the stone, each name one of the local men or women who sacrificed their lives in the first and second world wars. Brick Lane Music Hall now hosts a Remembrance service each year, held in conjunction with the Royal British Legion, with local schools and cadet groups, etc, in attendance and wreaths are once again laid at the memorial by the local community.
Hosted by Vincent Hayes and the Brick Lane Music Hall team, the events are well supported by staff and artists and their families, with moving contributions to the service itself from some of our regular performers. Pictured above, Brick Lane Music Hall ‘regulars’ Andrew Robley and Ben Goffe.

Each year we offer a very special Wartime Music Hall show, in remembrance as well as in celebration of that inimitable wartime spirit. Next year’s show will be in celebration of VE Day – marking the end of World War II in Europe in 1945.
